Here is couple things you need to know before you start to think about printing your business card or catalog. High quality print means:
- 4 color CMYK printing;
- High resolution image or file in certain file format;
- Correct file preparation. Bleeds, colors etc.
Why Four Color CMYK Printing?
Unlike inkjet printers or color photocopiers, full color (CMYK) printing provides accurate, detailed, brilliant reproduction of your originals at a low cost-per-sheet. Look at any magazine cover - Time, People, National Geographic - for an example of 4-color process printing. This is the kind of printing found at "commercial printers", not your local quick-printer shop and you will got best quality ever.
High resolution image. File formats.
Some customers think that they know enough to prepare file and send file downloaded form the site for printing. Please don't. Picture from the web has 72dpi (dots per inch). For printing we use minimum 150dpi (best is 300dpi). Plus there is restrictions for file formats. Bets are TIFF, PSD or PDF. But if you are not sure send us your working file and we will take care the rest.
Correct file preparation. Bleeds, colors, dpi
Bleed is very important in printing because if you have printed your file and did not setup correct bleeds there is a huge chances to receive your artwork where part of your text / image will be cut by the machine. To prevent that you need to setup 0.25 inch bleed on your file. That way you will have lot space between your actual artwork and cutting edge.
If you use commercial printing service you need to use CMYK color mode or you can loose a lot colors after work is printed because commercial printers use CMYK not RGB. And again please check before making your file that it has 300dpi resolution because after you made it with 72dpi even if you will change it to 300dpi you will lose in quality. Most likely to give design studio do all job and you will get print ready artwork with all these settings done.
